Gary R. Matthews PhD, CPA/PFS AIF

Gary is an investment advisory representative and network member of First Affirmative Financial Network. He has been a registered CPA since 1981, and has successfully completed NASD Series 7, 63 and 65 registrations. Gary is a fee-only financial advisor and specializes in socially responsible and sustainable investment, tax and financial strategies (SRI). He enjoys working with individuals, churches, religious organizations, not-for-profit groups and progressive small businesses.

Gary began his career as a tax and financial planner with Arthur Andersen & Co. in 1979. Working with individuals, closely-held companies and not-for-profit organizations, he was promoted to manager in 1983 and remained with the firm as an experienced tax and financial consulting manager until 1987.

He went on to become a Partner and Director of Taxes for a regional CPA firm in Albany, NY, again working primarily with closely-held companies, partnerships and individuals. He has specialized in sustainable investing and financial planning for the past decade.

Gary has been awarded the Personal Financial Specialist (PFS) credential by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA). He has also earned the ACCREDITED INVESTMENT FIDUCIARY® professional designation, awarded by the Center for Fiduciary Studies, associated with the University of Pittsburgh. In 2003 and again in 2005, First Affirmative Financial Network made "outstanding service" awards to Gary for his achievements in the field.

Gary has a variety of outside interests as well.  Currently, he serves on the Executive Committee and is Treasurer of GreenFaith, New Jersey’s interfaith coalition for the environment, and has also played a number of leadership roles at the Church of the Redeemer in Morristown, NJ, where he and his wife are members.  He is also a black belt instructor in the traditional martial art of moo doe, Oom Yung Doe style.

Gary received his PhD in social ethics from Union Theological Seminary in New York, and his MS in accounting from the State University of New York at Albany. He lives in Madison, NJ with his wife, Lisa.
